Saltwater Fishing for Beginners: How to Start Fishing in the Ocean

Saltwater fishing encompasses everything from surf casting for striped bass from a New Jersey beach to deep-sea fishing for tuna 50 miles offshore, and the gear, techniques, and knowledge required differ as dramatically as the fishing itself. For beginning saltwater anglers, the most accessible and most rewarding entry point is inshore fishing — targeting the species that live in estuaries, bays, tidal creeks, and the near-shore ocean environment within a few miles of the coast. Inshore saltwater fishing is achievable from shore, from kayaks and small boats, and from piers and jetties, and it targets species — redfish, speckled trout, flounder, stripers, pompano — that are abundant, responsive, and excellent table fare.

Saltwater License Requirements

Saltwater fishing requires a saltwater fishing license in most states in addition to any freshwater license. Federal regulations require a free Recreational Fishing Registry (formerly the saltwater angler registry) for anglers in states that are not in compliance with federal management requirements. Check your specific state’s requirements — they vary significantly in cost and where licenses can be purchased. Most states allow license purchase online through the state fish and wildlife agency website.

Inshore Target Species and Basic Tackle

A medium-action spinning rod in the 7 to 7.5-foot range rated for 1/4 to 3/4 ounce lures, paired with a size 3000 to 4000 spinning reel spooled with 10 to 20-pound braided line and a 20 to 30-pound fluorocarbon leader, handles almost all inshore saltwater fishing effectively. This setup handles live bait, popping corks with shrimp, jigs, and soft plastics — the presentations that cover redfish, speckled trout, and flounder in most inshore environments. The braided main line provides sensitivity and casting distance; the fluorocarbon leader is less visible to fish than braided line and resists the abrasion of structure and shell beds.
